The Office of Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) will launch a national review of all pending cases amid efforts to clear existing backlog.
In a statement, Secretary Public Prosecutions Dorcas Oduor said the office shall review all pending files within 100 days beginning January 22.
Oduor said the main aim of the review is to ascertain the main cause of case delays, identify cases that can be expedited, propose feasible and practical strategies for the ODPP prisons decongestion.
She said the office also aims to influence policy and legal reforms in the criminal justice sector and identify possible areas of intervention by stakeholders.
This comes barely days after Chief Justice David Maraga raised concerns over the rising numbers of people being remanded in prisons for petty crimes.
Elsewhere, a section of Maasai leaders from Narok County has welcomed the nomination of immediate former Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko to the cabinet.
Led by former Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Alex ole Magelo, the leaders lauded President Uhuru Kenyatta for the nomination of Tobiko to the cabinet terming it as an expression of faith in the Maa community.
They say Tobiko’s appointment will go a long way in addressing the problems of marginalization in the region.
The Leaders expressed optimism that Tobiko would assist the President to achieve his Big Four agenda.
The names of Tobiko, former Turkana Senator John Munyes, and former Marsabit Governor Ukur Yattani are yet to be submitted to Parliament for vetting as President Kenyatta plans to complete the reorganization of his government.
The National Assembly is on the other hand yet to form a vetting and appointment committee that is usually chaired by the Speaker and which is mandated to vet the nominees to the Cabinet.
