Machakos County governor Dr. Alfred Mutua has vowed to improve education standards in the county.
Speaking at Tseikuru Secondary School on Saturday, Dr. Mutua said that improving education is among his top agenda for the people.
Dr. Mutua said that schools in the county have been performing poorly, a reason he says as a county they have to improve the education standards to achieve better results.
He said that measures have been implemented to ensure that education standards are in the county are better, maintained and improved.
“My government takes education seriously and has started programmes that will improve the education sector,” said Dr. Mutua.
He said that the county is working with the national government to improve infrastructure in public schools.
Dr. Mutua also revealed that the county government has set aside enough money that will be used to buy learning material for students in public schools.
He however asked the national government to employ more teachers to handle the teaching staff deficit in the county as a way of improving education quality in the county.
Dr. Mutua said that the county has a shortage of teachers a situation he said resulted into poor results in national examinations.
He said that employing more teachers will help boost the level of education and performance since teacher to student ration will be balanced.
He also asked the national government to address teachers’ grievances to avoid strikes and go-slows which he said impacts negatively on learning.
