There was drama as residents of City Carton Slum in Athi River sub county fought over hippopotamus meat on Tuesday evening.
Mavoko Assistant County Commissioner David Tegutwa said on phone that the locals attacked each other using crude weapons after they disagreed on how to share the meat.
Tegutwa said it is suspected the culprits killed the animal after they spotted it along the banks of River Athi, a few metres from Stage 39 bridge on Mombasa Road.
He said Kenya Wildlife Service officers swiftly moved to the scene of the incident after they were alerted, thereby restoring peace among the residents.
Tegutwa condemned the incident, terming it unacceptable.
He said it is unlawful to kill wildlife for whatever reason(s).
The incident happened barely a week after another hippo and its young one were rescued from the wrath of the locals after it was spotted at the same point on Sunday.
