There was drama at Eldoret’s Oloo Street on Wednesday as county law enforcers engaged in a cat-and-mouse battle with hawkers.
The county officials, who were armed with tear gas canisters, caught the hawkers unawares. Some of the traders escaped, leaving their merchandise behind while others were arrested and bundled into a county lorry.
The hawker’s dream of making a kill from increased purchasing power ahead of the New Year festivities was interrupted by the enforcers. It is believed that the mop-up of hawkers w an attempt by the county government to clear the congested streets of Eldoret town.
The commotion saw onlookers scampering for safety and brought businesses to a standstill along the town’s major streets.
