There was a drama in Ruiru on Thursday morning when residents stormed a homestead to rescue a nine-year-old girl who they said had been locked in the house for seven days.
The disabled girl was said to have been tied with ropes to a chair and was living in a deplorable condition.
“Her mother has of late been tying her up before locking the house and leaving,” said Anne Muthoni, a resident.
However, the mother who was identified as Nancy Wambui refuted the claims that she had abandoned the daughter despite being ravaged by poverty.
“I have never left her. The people who look after the disabled people came here and I applied for help but it has not been forthcoming,” Wambui said.
Following the incident, Ruiru MP Esther Gathogo who was also present condemned the Ruiru children’s office for laxity.
“There are children officers here who are doing nothing in the office. If they do not want to work, they should quit immediately. The voluntary community health workers are doing much better than them,” Gathogo said.
