Drama unfolded today at Kahawa Wendani when a group of women forcefully confiscated property from a member of their group who failed to repay her loan which her husband was unaware of.
When the women from ‘Wamama tujiinue’ group came to Lilian Wanjau’s house, they met her husband who did not know what was happening. He tried to stop them from confiscating their property but he was overpowered by the enraged women who were not letting anyone get into their way.
“Lilian is playing with us; she has refused to pay back her loan of Sh100,000 which is long overdue. She was supposed to repay the loan mid-November last year and till now she has not started,” said an enraged member of the group.
Julia Mburu the group’s chairlady said that after Mrs. Wanjau took the loan, she never showed up for the subsequent meetings and each time she was making excuses.
She added that they decided to take her property as collateral to pay for her loan unfortunately she had not told her husband that she had taken a loan.
The incident attracted many neighbors and the Chief of Kahawa Wendani Ms. Christine Makimei had to be called for help.
The Chief said that Mrs. Wanjau had wronged both the group and her husband for taking a loan without discussing it first and the Chama had a right demand for their overdue loan.
She calmed the enraged husband and was able to make the husband and the chairlady came to an arrangement on how he would repay the loan hence was added some time.
The husband was able to source some money and made a first payment of Sh15,000 and promised to pay the remaining amount within 2 weeks’ time.
Makimei cautioned women not to be taking such huge loans using their family property as collateral without their husband’s knowledge.
