There was drama on Friday after a section of the Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) stormed Governor Jackson Mandago's office demanding the release of an arrested colleague.

Business came to a standstill for hours at the county headquarters when the MCA ordered Uasin Gishu county askaris to release Nominated MCA Samora Machel, who had been arrested for opposing the demolition of illegal structures at Kimumu along Eldoret-Iten road.

The second term county boss was not at the office during the incident when the MCAs led by Minority leader Ramadhan Ali, forced their way to the offices. The lawmakers accused the county askaris of misusing their powers following the arrest of Machel.

On his part, the arrested MCA said that the askaris misunderstood him, adding that he could not sit back and watch his people being mistreated by the county askaris.

"I could not watch as the askaris destroyed property because that was not what we [agreed on]" he said, as quoted by The Star.

The demolition comes weeks after Mandago asked the owners to move them immediately. County secretary Peter Lelei said that the askaris were acting on a directive from the governor.
