Drama unfolded on Thursday at Soysambu area in Gilgil as mourners tried to dump a casket containing a body after the vehicle they were travelling in was impounded by traffic police.
The mourners heading to Western Kenya from Nairobi and were forced to spend hours searching for another vehicle to ferry their deceased along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
Their attempts to abandon the body were thwarted by traffic police officers who kept vigil.
Andrew Wafula, one of the vehicle occupants and a relative to the deceased, expressed his disappointment, saying the crackdown was unfortunate.
“We are being expected in Busia by evening and yet our vehicle has been impounded,” he complained.
The driver of the vehicle was arrested and charged before a mobile court that had been set up at Gilgil trading centre.
Appearing before presiding Naivasha senior magistrate Shadrack Mwinzi, the driver was charged with over-speeding and driving without a licence.
The vehicle was also allegedly found not fit to be on the road.
A crack-down was launched on the highway to curb road accidents and arrest flouters of traffic regulations.
