There was drama at Kisumu's Nyamasaria area on Sunday after a suspect engaged police officers who had gone to arrest him in a fist fight. The suspect is accused of attacking a local chief and the officers have been hunting him down for the past one week. A plain cloth officer spotted him and in an attempt to arrest him, engaged him in a fist fight before other officers responded to his rescue call. The officers then managed to handcuff the suspect, who again overpowered the officers and took to his heels while in handcuffs. One officer chased and knocked him down, thereby falling into a ditch where he then refused to come out until his hands were freed. The officers yielded to his demands as the crowd started becoming wild in support of the suspect. “Police fear the public and they had just to uncuff the suspect to his safety,” said John Ouma, a boda boda rider. Upon being released, the suspect crawled out of the ditch and again took to his heels, this time around managing to run away. The officers from Nyamaria patrol base then returned to their base as the injured officer sought medical treatment since he was bleeding from the mouth and nose.
