There was drama at Makadara market in Thika on Thursday after some hawkers attacked and injured two county tax collectors.
The drama started when the tax collectors arrived at the market and demanded levies from some hawkers and traders.
However, the traders are said to have turned violent and started abusing the collectors branding them thieves.
A scuffle ensued that saw two of the collectors hit y blunt objects as anti-riot police were called in.
According to Mercy Njoroge, a trader, the tax collectors demanded levies but did not identify themselves, a move that angered the traders.
“They just came and started demanding levies from us claiming that we have been dodging them,” she said.
The collectors were taken to a nearby health center where they were treated and later discharged.
Musa Kariuki, a trader claimed that some people have been demanding taxes in the name of being county staff.
“We want the county government to investigate cases where we have been paying our dues to the wrong people,” he said.
Last month chaos erupted at the market after the county government announced closure of the Makadara market.
However the market was re-opened after the chaos escalated and property worth millions destroyed.
