There was drama on Friday as Wanyororo B residents tried to 'beg' a monkey that had grabbed a one year old child, to give back the little angel.Residents of Nairobi area, Godi and Garage could not believe their eyes while the wild animal from Menengai crater emerged and quickly grabbed the child, and stated running towards the crater where GDC is constructing a geothermal power plant.
However before the clever monkey could make it to the deepest part of crater, the residents who answered the kid's mother call of distress, came with bananas, Ugali and other leftovers surrounding the monkey and throwing the food stuffs to it so that it could release the child.
As soon as the monkey let the child go, one of the brave men ran quickly and picked the child.
After securing the child, the game changed as the residents stated beating the huge monkey with stones and sticks.
The residents later held demonstrations from that area to Maili Kumi, where they were addressed by Bahati MCA Peter Nderitu.
“Nugu must go! Tuondolewe nugu!” The residents shouted.
Nugu is a kikuyu name for Monkeys.
“They have stolen our chicken, goats and maize. We feel like we are not Kenyans. Where is the government of Kenya to come to our rescue?”the irate residents said.
“Nugu hawaogopi sisi wanawake” (Monkeys do not fear women) one woman shouted.
Addressing them outside his office, Nderitu popularly known as Birishiba said the residents did not harvest any crops as the monkeys had destroyed them.
“The residents do not kill the animals because they fear Kenya Wildlife Officers will take stern action against them,” Nderitu said.
He claimed that the monkeys left the crater after GDC stated working there.
“Before GDC stated working inside that hole, there was no human animal conflict. They (GDC) should work together with KWS to put up an electric fence around Menengai Crater,” Nderitu said.
