Kilifi police boss Alexander Makau who confirmed the incident said the suspect was driving a Probox when he was flagged down at the Mtwapa weighbridge.

Makau said it is during a routine check up when the driver jumped out of the vehicle and jumped into the Indian Ocean.

He said this prompted the police to check the vehicle and upon searching they found 3,120 rolls of bhang which were packed in five bags of 100 kgs.

The police boss said that the suspect was ferrying bhang with a street value of Sh600,000 from Mombasa to an unknown destination.

“This happened at around 5 pm, the officers who were in their routine check stopped the driver for a normal check. He jumped out of the window and escaped,” said police the boss as quoted by Baraka FM.

Mr Makau issued a stern warning to any individual conducting illegal business along the highway that they will face arrest and prosecution adding that the police officers are on high alert in the busy Malindi highway.

He added that the vehicle was towed to Mtwapa police station as police intensified a search for the driver who escaped.
