Police in Nyamira County have arrested the driver to a Sotik bound vehicle that veered off the road and plunged into Keroka market injuring scores of pedestrians on Tuesday evening.

This comes after the driver matatu failed to record a statement and went missing moments after the incident that was condemned by members of the public for careless driving.

Speaking to on Wednesday at Keroka Police Station, OCS Ronald Korir said police managed to arrest the suspect in a nearby house after a tip off from members of the public.

“We are happy that members of the public have worked with us to bring the culprit into custody. He decided to run away despite having been involved in the accident. He will be soon arraigned in court,” he said.

According to the OCS, the man said to be the driver, Chris Ochengo was not licensed after failing to produce relevant documents when he was asked to.

“He was not even licensed. Perhaps that is why he was running from the law. He will be charged with careless driving, driving without a license and injuring pedestrians,” Korir added.

He urged drivers to be cautious when using the road and insisted that they had the primary responsibility of ensuring pedestrians were protected.

“It is important to urge our road users especially drivers to ensure that pedestrians are safe. All drivers must ensure they adhere to rules and regulations to minimise increasing incidents of road carnage in the county,” he said.

The injured, who are estimated to be 15 are being treated in Kisii Level 6 Hospital.
