According to some of them, the area has witnessed more than 15 accidents with an estimated 30 people perishing on the spot  and over 200 others sustaining serious injuries in a duration of five years.

On Tuesday, the residents said most of the accidents take place during rainy seasons which are normally experienced in the months of March to May.

“As a villager here, I have seen many people die as a result of careless driving in this place. It will be a shame if we continue losing our people through accidents that can be avoided," said Lucy Nyariki.

“In my entire life, I have witnessed some 10 accidents here. As you can see, the road is steep towards Nyansiongo and during March-May rainy season, these accidents are common,” added Ken Asuma.

They asked drivers to take responsibility by driving cautiously in a bid to save lives without necessarily being pursued by the traffic officers.

“This is common sense. Drivers should be self-responsible because this is about saving a life. They don’t have to be followed by traffic officers every time. Some things can just be done without intensive supervision,” Asuma said.
