Hundreds of passengers travelling upcountry were stranded on Tuesday at Athi River Police Station after drivers they were travelling were arrested.

They were arrested for speeding and other traffic offences in a crackdown on the Nairobi - Mombasa and Nairobi Namanga Roads.

Athi River OCPD Mutoro Kizito told the press at a press conference in his office that the crackdown was intemnded to ensure reduced accidents and crime on the roads.

"These are normal operations solemnly and purposely to ensure that the festive season went successfully with reduced crime and accident," said Mutoro.

Mutoro said all units that form police service had been deployed on the roads for the operations and warned motorists against flouting traffic rules.

He told the passengers to be patient as the drivers would be released on cash bail hence no inconveniences would be posed to them.
