Business activities were interrupted in Thika town when drivers and their touts operating along the Thika-Makongeni road staged a peaceful demonstration.
The demonstration was occasioned by the poor state of the road they operate on.
Led by the Thika Transporters Sacco chairman Josphat Makunyi, the operators organised the protest after the county government failed to act on the issues they had raised on the state of the roads and transport.
According to Makunyi, they held a meeting earlier with the county officials and the latter promised to act with speed, only for it to take 'decades'.
“The county government had promised to act fast on the construction of this road. It is taking too long to construct," Makunyi said.
The demonstration, which attracted the police in Thika, came to a stop when the county roads executive Njeri Gatabaki addressed the demonstrators.
The executive assured the protestors of immediate action on their issues and said that they had been waiting for cash to be released by the county government.
“We regret failing to act faster but it is not my fault. Any time from now we are starting the preparations," she assured.
Normal operations resumed after the county executive member’s speech.
