About 30 cows were spotted grazing in Kidfarmaco Estate in Kikuyu Constituency yesterday causing unease to residents.

The herd in the estate was quite an unusual spectacle but this was because of the long dry spell throughout the country, which has left most areas with no fodder for livestock.

The cows were guided by two herders, who although they did not reveal their names, said they had walked many kilometres with the cows to ensure they found something to feed on.

“We are from Kajiado and here at the estate, we saw there was at least some green grass for the cows to eat,” said one of the herders.

One of the Kidfarmaco estate residents, Carol Wanjiru, said she was not bothered with the presence of the cows as long as they did not graze on people’s gardens and compounds.

“We understand there has been a dry period and we would not like the cows to die which are a source of livelihood for some communities,” said Wanjiru.

Some of the cows had humps, very long horns and seemingly emaciated.

Luckily, rain has started falling in some parts of the country and the grass and other livestock fodder will soon be replenished.

Paul Waweru, another resident in the estate said that was not the first time cows were seen grazing in the estate but that usually happens many times during the dry seasons.
