Milk farmers in Makongeni area are now experiencing a rough time due to lack of pasture and insufficient water. Most of their cows and goats are now feeding on waste sites looking for kitchen leftovers.Joseph Kuria, a farmer from Makongeni Phase 8 on Wednesday said that farmers have always been suffering in the month of January due to lack of water and pasture."Water and grass are the major challenges we face in the month of January forcing us to sell some of our animals. Many cows die of hunger and others are affected by diseases caused by hunger and dehydration leading to big losses," Kuria said.He added, "It is always tough for us to persevere the impact of the season but we have no choice other than look for greener pastures to avoid losses," he added. At times the herders are forced to go so deep in the interiors to get grass and water for their animals.
