The Council of Governors (CoG) has affirmed its support to the suffering Kenyans, due to the drought being experienced in the country.
CoG in-partnership with the Kenya Red Cross Commission (KRC) jointly appeals for Sh1 billion to intervene and support affected people.
"To this end the County governments will each donate Ksh 1 million to be channeled to the Red Cross Drought Fund through the Council of Governors. Excellency Governors will also contribute personally to the Kitty,'' said CoG chairman Peter Munya.
The two institutions will also adopt the cash transfer and food voucher system instead of donating maize to the people, who have serious nutritional problems.
Munya said the method is more dignified, cheaper and more effective way of helping the affected, instead of having them queue for food rations.
''The Council of Governors notes that the disaster is beyond any individual Counties to manage. Support by National government to the affected counties is not well coordinated. The Counties are not aware of the intervention being done by the National government.''
Munya further warned that there was need to harmonise the co-ordination of intervention activities at the County levels, done by the County governments, National governments and the Development Partners.
''The Council of Governors is aware that the National Government has allocated 21 Billion to respond to the current drought. The planning and implementation processes should be inclusive,'' indicated the Meru governor, in a statement.
Drought needs are increasing by the day, especially in the Arid and Semi-Arid areas, according to the Council.
''As from August 2016 the targeted number of people for assistance was 1.3 million Kenyans. The number person is increasing day by day with more than 2.7 million Kenyans in need of assistance by February 2017.''
It is estimated that by April, 2017, four million people will need assistance.
