Youths in Kikuyu Sub-County have been urged to avoid drug use which has led to the continuous decrease of man power in the labour industry in the area.
Speaking from his office on Tuesday, the Sub-County youth affairs officer in Kikuyu Mr. Edward Ng’ang’a said that many youths have been largely immersed in drug use as a result of poor parenting.
Mr. Ng’ang’a further said that some youths have ended up losing their jobs due to poor performance at their working stations which has made it difficult for other youths to fill those posts due to the bad reputation left. He attributed the reduced performance to the poor mental state caused by substance abuse.
The youth affairs officer also cited that peer pressure is one of the major contributing factors driving the young people in the area to alcoholism and drug use.
This writer caught up with one youth, John Kamau who spoke about his plight in trying to quit alcohol. He said that he finds it hard to control this vice as he was already an addict and is unable to function right without it.
Kamau said that most of the young people are unable to overcome this drug challenge as some of them were introduced to drugs while they were young and have adopted to it.
