The public cry was made by a section of church leaders after the Sunday church service in the Kibera Baptist Church. The clergy expressed their concern that the youthful and energetic individuals who should be in the forefront in development strategies are now becoming a burden to the society.

Led by Pastor Kiilu, the leaders encouraged the youth to seek alternative ways of sustaining themselves other than getting into drugs that work against their health.

While recognising the challenge of unemployment as a motivating factor to the youth opting for drug abuse, he noted that much can be done to salvage the situation.

‘'It is not too late to remedy the situation. We can fight drug abuse amongst our youth by creating employment opportunities. Let us try to be job creators ourselves other than being active job seekers,’' said Kiilu.

The drugs commonly used by the youth are bhang and the outlawed local brews like chang'aa. The clergy also urged the government officials to engage in rehabilitation initiatives to save the coming generations from fading away.
