Drug and substance abuse has been cited as a major contributor to the rising crime rates, HIV/AIDS prevalence, and poverty among other emerging social vices in the slums.
Statistics from a national survey conducted by the NACADA reveals that alcohol is the most dangerous substance owing to its impact on criminal acts and social-economic effects.
Speaking during NACADA workshop, Adrian Njenga who is an official at the anti-narcotics agency explained that alcohol and drug abuse largely led to increased crimes, chronic illnesses, increased risk of HIV infections and even death.
“Alcohol and drug abuse eventually lead to drug trafficking, increased risks of HIV infection and even impotence,” he said.
Njenga further added that the recent school unrests witnessed across the counties were linked to alcohol and substance abuse by students.
This comes at a time when the city-county is under public pressure to establish rehabilitation centers in Kibera to help drug addicts reform and become better citizens.
