Kisii County Director of Education, Joseph Moturi, commended parents and all education stakeholders across the county for intervening in the fight against drug abuse in schools.

“Drug abuse has been a great problem that for long have been emanating from the community, for instance children imitate cigarette smoking and alcoholism at their homes and when they go to school they teach their friends the habit,” notes Moturi.

He urged parents to be keen on the behavior of their kids and those they socialize with.

He said that incidents of drug abuse by students reported last year have decreased by 40 percent.

“This is a good progress and it means we will manage eradicate drug abuse in our institution,” said Moturi.

He said their Quality Assurance Office has been at the forefront in the war and emphasized on the need for schools to have guidance and counseling department.

“Those departments will be charged with the responsibility of sensitizing students on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse,” explained Moturi.

He called on all institutional heads to ensure learners in their respective institutions take part in co -curricular activities and academic trips rather than confine themselves in books.

Moturi also urged teachers to be at the forefront of fighting substance abuse among learners as they spend a lot of time with them during the contact hours.
