The Kenya Film and Classification Board (KFCB) chairman Ezekiel Mutua has blamed the unrest in some schools on drugs and substance abuse.
Mutua claims that drug abuse is still rampant among students in schools in the country.
On Wednesday, Mutua said that time has come for education stakeholders and parents to intensively sensitise students on effects of drugs and substance abuse.
“What we are experiencing in some of our schools right now is a result of drug abuse,” he said.
Mutua also blamed lack of proper guiding and counseling to the unrest. He said that students need keen attention especially on the issues they are experiencing as adolescents.
He also blamed the unrest to some media content the students get access to. He said that some movies and TV commercials depict violence as a normal thing.
“Some of the movies and TV content our students get access is to blame for the violence behavior they exhibit,” he said.
Mutua said that the commission is working with other government agencies to ensure the right content is disseminated on media platforms.
There is an outcry in the country right now following a wave of unrest in some schools where students are burning dormitories and destroying property worth millions.
On Saturday night seven dormitories were razed down by fire at Itiero Boys High School in Kisii prompting Education CS Fred Matiang’i to visit the school on Monday.
The dormitories are said to have been torched by students though investigations are ongoing to establish the cause.
A section of Education experts and analysts in Kiambu have blamed harsh policies and poor teacher student relations to the unrest.
Educationists are calling on the government to develop guidelines that will ensure students are engaged in administration and management of schools to curb the unrest.
