According to the County Director of Education Joseph Moturi, all parents and education stakeholders across the county who had neglected the responsibility of taking care of their children and ending indulgence in drugs are now a bit responsible.

“Drug abuse has been a great problem that for long has been coming from the community. For instance, children imitate cigarette smoking and alcoholism at their homes and when they go to school they teach their friends the habit. Parents should, therefore, be keen on the behaviour of their kids and those they socialize with,” Moturi explained.

He said that incidents of drug abuse by students reported last year have decreased by 40 per cent hence showing a good direction of drug control among students in the county.

Moturi said their Quality Assurance Office has been at the forefront in the war and emphasised on the need for schools to have guidance and counselling department charged with the responsibility of sensitising students on the effects of drug and alcohol abuse.

He called on all institutional heads to ensure learners in their respective institutions take part in co -curricular activities and academic trips rather than confine them to books only.

Moturi also urged teachers to be at the forefront of fighting substance abuse among learners as they spend a lot of time with them during the contact hours.
