Uasin Gishu Senator Prof. Margaret Kamar has expressed concerns over an increase of drug abuse and alcohol consumption among the youths in the country.
Prof. Kamar has termed the trend as worrying and called for concerted efforts among various stakeholders in addressing it.
Speaking in Eldoret town on Wednesday, the Senator further asked families who have youths involved in drug abuse to consider taking them to rehabilitation centers.
"Excessive alcohol consumption and drug abuse is sickness and those people affected should be taken to rehabilitation centers so that they can get help and return to being productive citizens," noted Prof. Kamar.
She also challenged affected youths to be willing to change their behaviors saying "drug abuse can only be addressed if youths are willing to change.
"The Senator also asked the youth to work towards being among peers that might influence them in engaging in unproductive activities.
"Peer pressure that will make one want to study medicine because the rest of his/her friends are also taking that course is good but the one that drags you into drug abuse should be avoided in any means possible," noted Prof. Kamar.
"I always tell young people that they should allow themselves to be the tools of experimenting with all kinds of drugs in the market," she added.
