Police in Lamu East on Saturday shot dead a suspected drug dealer as police intensify crackdown  on the narcotics in the region.

Police said the suspect Mohamed Hassan aged 27 has been a notorious drug dealer in the area.

Police officers raided the suspect's drug den after locals tipped the police. 

He attacked and injured a police officer on the right hand using a machete.

A police officer who requested for anonymity said 4 of officers raided the drug den at 1:30 pm in a hunt for suspects. 

The officers said others surrendered but he deceased resisted and attacked another officer by cutting him severally on the right hand. 

"He refused to surrender, we had to shoot him. He was shot in the lower abdomen," the officer said.

Gilbert Kitiyo, Lamu county commissioner said  the suspect was dangerous and he has been on police radar for quite some time.

"The officers shot and killed the suspect after he attacked and physically assaulted one of the officers with a machete. The officers acted in self defence. Police recovered several sachets of heroin and two machetes from the deceased," Kitiyo said
