A section of Mombasa politicians have accused the government of politicising the ongoing crackdown on drugs in the country.
Led by Mvita MP Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir the leaders on Tuesday said they support the war against drugs in the Coast region, but the issue should not degenerate into a political contest.
Nassir said the war on drugs can only be won through concerted efforts, and called upon the government to seal its boarders at the Coast.
The lawmaker further challenged the government to firmly deal with drug barons, if at all they are well known.
"The government knows these people and it should not hesitate in arresting them. The regional coordinator should take action instead of issuing threats at press conferences," said Nassir.
On his part, Kisauni MP Rashid Bedzimba said that the drug war had taken a political twist, adding that its timing speaks volumes.
His sentiments were backed by Changamwe MP Omar Mwinyi who accused the government of using the war to settle political scores.
Mombasa Women Representative Mishi Mboko accused Marwa of being a stumbling block in the fight against drugs at the Coast.
