Addressing local headteachers during a special security meeting held at Tala Girls high school to discuss unrest in schools, Chesire urged school principals to be extra vigilant in order to ensure any channels used by peddlers to supply narcotics to students are cut.

"We all have a collective responsibility to ensure our learning institutions are free from supply of drugs and in this, principals have a key role to play in monitoring their students at all times," said Chesire.

The meeting came at a time when dozens of secondary schools across the country have been rocked by strikes and destruction of property by students.

Matungulu DO 1 Walter Katonon who also addressed the forum on Friday asked teachers to immediately inform security agents of any signs of unrest among students.

"By doing so we will secure reasonable response time in order to prevent possible destruction of property or even loss of lives as witnessed before," he said.

The forum was also addressed by Matungulu DEO Hellen Yawe and Kangundo branch Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) executive secretary Daniel Nginga.
