According to a report jointly compiled and presented by Students' Campaigns Against Drugs (SCAD) in conjunction with NACADA, a massive 36 percent of the country's entire student population take part in underage alcohol consumption.

Among the drink consumers, female students account for 42 percent while the remaining tally is taken by the male population. Beers and spirits were singled out as the most consumed brands.

However, peer pressure has been identified as the biggest motivator that attracts students to get into the vice. Basing on the recorded statistics in the report, four out of ten students consume alcohol in Nairobi schools, especially those in the slum residential areas.

Furthermore, 29.9 percent of the students alcoholics are in Form four, 21.3 percent in Form three, 18.3 percent in Form two and the remaining 6.3 percent in Form one.

Boys' schools account for the highest number of affected institutions, and the habit is common in students with termly amounts of between Sh3,000 and Sh5,000 as pocket money.

The study involved children between the ages of between 12 and 18 years both in the day and boarding schools across the country.
