A man was rushed to the Nyansiongo Sub District Hospital in Borabu constituency after allegedly consuming excessive liquor and subsequently falling into a river when he tried to cross.
William Mbaka, 50, who hails from Esise village sustained serious injuries on his legs and arms on Tuesday when he attempted to cross on a water pipe to reach his home.
According to eye witnesses, the victim had consumed a lot of liquor in the nearby Mbanda village before meeting the tragedy in the late hours of the day.
“I was taking chang’aa with him but I guess he must have taken a lot. He was struggling and screaming a lot by the time we were leaving the den. I heard later of the tragedy although we had cautioned him against using the said route,” said Joash Nyamaba, a friend to the victim.
According to Nyamaba, Mbaka insisted on using a longer a dangerous route after efforts to persuade him otherwise bore no fruit since he remained hostile and abusive.
“I personally told him to avoid the route since it was getting dark and there was no clear path in that area only for him to remain arrogant and hostile. But I must admit that this is the first time he tried to use the path,” he said.
According to the hospital nurse Stella Omari, the victim is in a critical but stable condition.
“He is suffering fractured bones but we will ensure that everything is fixed as soon as possible,” she said.
