An assistant chief in Nakuru caught on camera drunk while clad in uniform during president Kenyatta’s visit of the region last week has been sacked, as the war on illicit brews intensifies.
“The administrator was undermining government effort against illicit brews and will soon be charged in court with abetting sale of killer brews,” said Rift Valley regional coordinator Wanyama Musiambo while confirming his sacking.
The Mawingu sub-location assistant chief, Joseph Wycliffe Rotich, was shown the door after a video showing him drunk was captured by the public and shared widely on social media.
The coordinator said that the chief has confessed being drunk while on duty against the law, but said he had just taken a little chang’aa.
The video showed the chief rolling on the ground at a drinking joint in Murinduko shopping center in Kuresoi North while under the influence of the illicit brew.
His message to President Uhuru in the recorded cell phone footage was: “I must drink, don’t bother me. I am a man and I was ordered to do so during my initiation to adulthood,".
At the same time, the coordinator warned brewers who have developed the norm of attacking government officers while on duty.
He was referring to last weekend`s case where a Maji Tamu location chief was shot with an arrow while conducting a raid against illicit brews at lower Solai in Nakuru county.
