National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has backed a proposal to reduce the number of people’s representatives in the government as suggested by the group that undertook the audit of the impact of the constitution.
Addressing the press on the sidelines of a meeting with the Kenya Private Sector Alliance held in Mombasa, Duale supported the finding that the nation has more elected representatives than needs is a fact.
“As far as the governance structure goes, we are bloated; it is expensive, uncalled for. I think even if we look at other countries, and I have seen the analysis by the media, our neighbours have more rational balanced structures. You can’t have 43 million represented by more than 3,000 people,” Duale said.
However, Duale differed on whether the changes that had been recommended by the team led by Auditor-General Edward Ouko should implement the changes before or after the nation has held the next general elections.
According to Duale, the proposal has come at an unexpected time.
“It is coming at the wrong time and we need to interrogate that document in 2018 when the 12th Parliament is in session,” he posed.
Speaker Justin Muturi said that the report tabled in the National Assembly needs to be addressed to determine the possible changes that should be made.
