Speaking at the National Assembly, Duale said that the two have not shown the determination to fight cartels behind contraband sugar. The Garissa lawmaker claimed that 1 million bags of the contraband sugar are lying somewhere in Nakuru.

“As we sit here I want to ask the Interior Cabinet Secretary to go Nakuru blankets godown… There are 1 million bags of that sugar, at Ripelay godown in industrial area there is sugar, in Menengai refineries and JB Maina Warehouse in Mombasa there are thousands of bags,” said Duale.

He also questioned why Matiang’i has been moving across the nation when he knows what it is happening in the country.

“Why is the Interior Minister going round Eastleigh, Kisii, Meru. We want to know who is protecting this importer,” Duale posed.

The issue of contraband sugar has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions. Kenyans from different parts of the nation have lamented about the risk of consuming the sugar. Leaders have called for crackdown on persons behind the sugar importation.
