President Uhuru Kenyatta and his Deputy William Ruto won the last general election in a free and fair manner, National Majority Leader Aden Duale has said.

According to Duale, National Super Alliance (NASA) plan to lock out Jubilee from its stronghold backfired leading to the humiliating defeat.

The Garissa lawmaker also said that the opposition leader opted to drop from the race because he has sensed earlier defeat from the ruling party.

“NASA was banking on the undivided support of regions such as western, Coast, Kisii and Kajiado to ride to victory. They had also counted on Rift Valley to get as much as 30 percent. When the elections were conducted and votes tallied, it emerged that their plans had spectacularly backfired,” he wrote in an opinion piece on Standard.

Duale, who has been a strong critic of opposition, also said that Uhuru would have beaten Raila with a bigger margin had he not opted to drop from the rerun.

“He has skipped the polls to avoid another humiliating defeat which was bound to be as heavy as that of August 8. In fact, it could be worse. Raila should live up to his democratic credentials, own up, spare Kenyans the charade and go into retirement,” he said.
