The majority leader in Parliament, Adan Duale has today said that he will present a bill to parliament to introduce sex education following the government report on teenagers with HIV in schools.
This is after the education ministry on Tuesday stated that about 180,000 adolescents in schools are HIV positive. Out of these 75,600 were not accessing ARVs, hence 14 teenagers die daily of HIV complications while 98 are infected.
Speaking at his office on Wednesday, Duale said that the rate at which children are getting infected and dying of HIV is alarming hence immediate action should be taken to control the situation.
He explained that children today have known so much through the emergence of the internet that teach them what we cant now control because they already know what we assume they don’t.
‘’Its about time that we take this matter seriously.Children are now engaging in sex and as parents, we have to be aware of this and at this time we should now look for a solution to this,’’ said Duale.
He explained that sex education was the best alternative for children because most parents cannot directly speak to their children on such topics. He explained that it was time to put some traditions aside and live in the present and just accept some facts and deal with them as they are.
‘’I am going to present a bill to parliament to propose on sex education to curb the cases of HIV in schools. It is something that is going to help our children and I know this is going to get opposition from religion and traditions but its what is best for our children,’’ said Duale.
