National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has welcomed the move by the national government to provide water to drought affected families in Garissa County.
Duale said the commissioning of the Libahley water pan in Garissa County will ease water shortage among pastoralists.
Through the project, area residents will be able to access clean and safe water which will improve their living standards and also address the food security issue.
Duale said the drought that was being experienced in parts of the arid and semi-arid counties has adversely affected many families who most are herders.
He said pastoralists’ communities in the affected areas have been migrating in search of water and pasture for their animals.
The Garissa Township MP added that the water board had rehabilitated, dug and drilled several boreholes, dams and water pans in areas worst hit by drought saving thousands of livestock farmers from losing their animals.
“The situation could have been different had the state agencies and other well-wishers not come to the aid of the pastoralists communities who were faced with imminent starvation,” said Duale.
The Northern Water Service Board had commissioned the Sh61.5 million Libahley water pan in Diiso village, Garissa County.
