National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has responded to Opposition leader’s newly announced People’s Assembly initiative.
The vocal Jubilee politician now says the creation of the new organ is a true testimony that NASA was out of ideas.
Duale faulted the new formation saying that the constitution has no window for such assemblies and that it was a waste of time.
“Odinga’s formation is not in the Constitution. What is found in the Constitution is the Houses Parliament, the National Assembly, Senate and the County Assemblies. Raila Odinga cannot introduce an assembly which is not anchored in the Constitution,” Duale said.
Odinga had argued on October 31 that through the Alliance, his team would carry on with the restoration of democracy by engaging civil society, workers’ unions, religious leaders, and other interests groups until a legitimate president is installed.
But the Garissa Township Member of Parliament dashed hopes of the opposition for a new election in a period of 90 days saying no dialogue between the NASA chief and President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Duale stated; “Our friends in Opposition cannot ask something which is not in the Constitution. There is no provision in the constitution that says that there shall be elections within 90 days. The only elections as anchored in the law include the General Election that comes after every five years, by-elections, presidential and presidential repeat elections as found in article 143 of the Constitution.”
The Opposition announced its dismissal of the October 26 fresh poll results as a sham.
Speaking for the first time since President Kenyatta was officially granted the certification to have been validly re-elected; the former prime minister dismissed the October 26 election once again terming it a fraud that sought to install illegitimate leadership in the country.
The Opposition chief pledged not to recognise President Kenyatta's administration.
He announced the establishment of the People’s Assembly-an organ that will manage the country in the meantime-until a “legitimate” government is installed.
