National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has claimed that the opposition is working on a ploy to rig the next general election by hacking the IEBC system.
Duale said this after a key opposition leader was implicated in a scam where individuals have been using their technological skills to log into bank systems, hack them and steal money.
The Majority Leader demanded immediate arrest of the politician and asked the police to start investigations on an alleged impending IEBC hack.
“Any attempt to hack into the IEBC database is criminal and those mentioned must be arrested,” he said Saturday.
He said that the opposition's recent allegations of hacking plans at the IEBC were meant to divert attention from the real hackers.
“It all makes perfect sense now. The whole noise about rigging of August elections by Cord (Nasa) leaders was meant to divert attention.
"It was a plot to hoodwink Kenyans to look the other way when, indeed, the opposition leaders were the ones busy attempting to interfere with the election,” said Duale.
He demanded that parliamentary committees and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission probe the matter.
“It is outrageous that a top Cord leader, who has been at the forefront of claiming that Jubilee would rig the elections, is linked to repeated attempts to infiltrate the IEBC database through hacking.
"Nothing can be more bizarre and criminal than attempting to subvert democracy to suit a few power-hungry individuals,” said Duale in a statement sent to newsrooms.
However, IEBC Communications Manager Andrew Limo has calmed fears and said the commission’s systems have been guarded against manipulation and technological vulnerabilities.
