National Majority Leader Aden Duale has dismissed a petition seeking to nullify President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win during the October rerun.

According to Duale, the Garissa Township MP, a petition filed by Njonjo Mue is defective. The vocal lawmaker insisted that Uhuru and his Deputy William Ruto were elected in a free and fair manner.

The lawmaker said that the national assembly has the mandate to enact laws to govern the election of the president. He was responding to the claims that the Election Amendment Act contravened the Constitution.

"Article 94 of the Constitution affirms that the legislative authority of the Republic is derived from the people and, at the national level, is vested in and exercised by Parliament. It is therefore within Parliament’s mandate to enact and review laws as appropriate," Duale said, as quoted by the Standard.

Duale, a strong critic of the opposition, said that the electoral laws did not intend to diminish the role of technology when it comes to the electoral process.

The remarks of the lawmaker come at a time when leaders of the opposition have vowed to swear in Former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga in the event that Jubilee swears in President Uhuru Kenyatta for his second term in power.
