Kenya is not a banana republic to allow the United Nations to print ballot papers ahead of the fresh elections, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has said.
The Garissa MP, who was speaking in parliament, said that leaders of the National Super Alliance (NASA) are taking back this nation with calls for a UN development agency to finance the printing of ballot papers we head to a rerun following the cancellation of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s win.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chief executive officer Ezra Chiloba had said the proposal to bring UN into the polls is still under discussion.
“Kenya is not a banana republic. The only places where the UN can conduct elections are Haiti and Liberia,” Mr Duale said in the National Assembly, as quoted by Nation.
"Any election conducted with proceeds from the UN is illegal. This is just because he wants to satisfy the ego of someone who is power-hungry,” he added.
On his part, NASA Presidential candidate, Raila Amolo Odinga has maintained that the opposition will not allow Dubai based firm Al Ghurair to print presidential ballot papers.
