The National Security Council has powers to deploy the military without necessarily having to seek approval from parliament, National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has said.
Speaking on Friday, Duale said that the council can decide to deploy officers to different areas of the nation in the event of that people’s lives are at risk since the House is not in session.
“The National Security Council has an exceptional mandate to deploy KDF and other security organs to areas where lives and properties of Kenyans are at risk,” he said, as quoted by The Star.
This is after leaders of the opposition filed a case in which they sought to challenge the recent deployment of security agents in areas that are deemed possible hotspots of violence ahead of the August General elections.
Duale, who is defending his post, said that the security agents have been tasked with ensuring that there is peace during the electioneering period.
He further asked the opposition not to politicize everything just because they want to ascend to power, adding that the security of Kenyans is paramount.
Leaders aligned to NASA have lamented about a plot to ensure voter apathy in Raila’s strongholds.
