National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale has called for the immediate payment of Sh945 million compensation awarded to the late veteran politician Kenneth Matiba.
Speaking in Parliament on Tuesday as MPs paid tribute to the late Matiba, Mr. Duale said the Sh945 million compensation should be included in this year’s supplementary budget.
Mr. Duale said the Budget and Appropriations Committee should ensure that the amount is factored in the second Supplementary Budget that was tabled in Parliament last week.
“I want the Budget committee to ensure that the money awarded to Mr. Matiba by the High Court is in the supplementary budget. Mr. Matiba lost his business and health while fighting for our democratic space,” said Mr. Duale as quoted by Daily Nation.
Mr. Matiba, aged 85, died while undergoing treatment at the Karen Hospital ICU in Nairobi after suffering from cardiac arrest.
Mr. Matiba was awarded Sh945 million by the court after he moved to court to sue the government for illegal detention by the KANU regime in 1990.
The court awarded the compensation after Mr. Matiba lost his investments, time spent in court and huge medical bills incurred after a stroke he suffered while in detention.
