Garissa Township MP on Friday moved in the amendments to the Witness Protection Bill of 2016 that is currently in its second reading.
According to the legislator, the principal object of the Bill was to amend the Witness Protection Act, 2006, for the purposes of aligning the provisions of the Act to be in line with the Constitution and to further create several provisions for reciprocal witness protection arrangements with other foreign countries to ensure its effective operationalization.
Among the amendments are those of clauses of seventeen and eighteen. Clause 17 of the Bill seeks to effect changes in section five by providing for the specific circumstances under which any witness may continue to be protected in the protection programme for a more prolonged period of time.
Clause 18 of the Bill proposes amendments in section six of the Act to pave way for other considerations in the larger list of considerations to be adopted by the Director of prosecution before admitting a person in the protection programme.
