National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale now wants the Sh. 1 million bride price reduced. The lawmaker insisted that youths cannot afford to settle the bride price in order to marry.
He also said that parents are using marriage to mint money, adding that it is not necessary. He was speaking at the Eastleigh High School during Somali annual festival, Firi Cultural Expo Eastleigh.
“The cost of Muslim marriage must be reduced. Telling youth to pay Sh1 million ($10,000) to marry is wrong. As Muslims, we have terribly failed. We must make the component of marriage to be simple and cheap so that we stop youth from engaging in illicit relationships,” said Mr. Duale.
He said that the trend of parents demanding for Sh. 1 million dowry is not right, adding that the idea is influenced the Western culture.
He further called upon the Kikuyu community to heed to the call of Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba for men to marry several women.
The argument of the woman rep has continued to elicit mixed reactions from different factions. Wamuchomba has maintained that she will continue pushing for her ideologies.
