Former presidential candidate Nazlin Umar has criticized the government for asking poor Kenyans to raise funds to help victims of the Solai Dam tragedy.
Ms Umar said the government should not burden Kenyans to fund raise when the government had allocated emergency funds.
The government had established a pay bill number to support the victims of the Wednesday Solai Dam tragedy in Nakuru when the walls of a private dam collapsed killing at least 44 people.
Ms Umar said that a lot of money allocated to development projects is being lost yet nothing is done to the perpetrators.
It is unrealistic for government to allocate billions of shillings to unnecessary projects yet go back to ask tax payers to contribute funds to help victims of Solai Dam tragedy, she added.
“We have a boisterous emergency fund which has been stolen, it's not seen, no one wants to talk about it. We had set aside el-nino funds of Billions. Again that too has disappeared and no one wants to talk about it.”
“Then, I have yet to hear a message of condolence from our President but his government is which to beg tax burdened Kenyans to dip into their pockets. I sent my condolences the very first day. Why was his office quick to send one to the Paris victims and not Solai with 40 deaths, 50 missing, 500 displaced and their homes and properties washed away. Why don't we ever have our priorities right?????????,” questioned Ms Umar on her facebook account.
The former presidential candidate however urged Kenyans to help the victims in any way they can but said the money contributed could easily end up in someone else's pocket if there is no accountability.
“Anyway for those who can spare a penny please do let's get together to aid one of our own, knowing very well that most of this fundraiser too will be looted without accountability,” she added.
