City manager Doris Ombara said they had purchased a Sh 30 million piece of land for the relocation of the Kachok dumpsite. This has come barely a month after the county governor revealed that a plan to relocate the site was underway.

Speaking to journalists in her office, Ombara said the land located at Kibigori in Muhoroni Constituency was approved by Governor Jack Ranguma during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

“We are very happy that eventually the Kachok dumpsite will be relocated to a new site a way from town,” said Ombara.

The city manager said the relocation of the dumpsite was part of the Kisumu Urban Project (KUP) which envisaged a new plan for the lakeside city.

Kachok dumpsite has been a subject of controversy pitting the county government and various leaders.

Kisumu currently collects more than 473,000 metric tonnes of waste per day and is among the few cities in the region with dumpsites in the Central Business District.

Ombara said the county had also set aside Sh800 million as part of the waste management programme and which will be used for cleaning of estates and recycling of waste to produce energy.
