A Kisumu magistrate court on Friday ruled that two people arrested last week for allegedly being in possession of counterfeit Kenyan notes are not candidates for bail and should remain in custody.

Chief Magistrate Catherine Owino said the duo's actions have a bearing on the country's economy.

"After hearing submissions from both counsels, it is the courts view that these accused persons are not suitable candidates for bail. Their offence has a bearing on the national economy, it is not in the interest of justice to grant them bail because the offence they committed is of national interest," said Magistrate Owino.

The prosecution desk said that acting on a tip-off, police arrested Gregory Ochieng and Edgar Kadawu alleged to be in possession of fake notes worth Sh20,000.

The suspects were arrested in Kisumu on July 14, 2015 after a trader notified a police officer on patrol that the two had tried to purchase goods from him using fake currency.

The prosecution told the court that the source of the money was yet to be determined and therefore more time should be given to carry out investigations into the matter.

The two denied the allegations against them and were remanded in prison until August 14, 2015 when the case will be heard.
