Confirming the arrest, EACC Upper Eastern Director Ignatius Wekesa said the Assistant Chief Joshua Nkarichia solicited a bribe of Sh30,000 to allow a resident to sell his own piece of land.

Mr. Wekesa said the assistant chief had sorted the money from Mr. Gerald Rukinya Ngeera to allow him to sell a piece of his land purporting that the said land was public land.

Mr. Ngeera reported the matter to the EACC office after he re-negotiated with the assistant chief to give him Sh16,000 as a bribe.

EACC officers then gave the complainant, Mr. Ngeera marked notes and they were able to arrest the suspect as he received the agreed Sh16,000 at a hotel on the outskirts of Isiolo town.

“The matter was reported in the EACC office and our officers laid a trap and arrested Joshua Nkarichia who is the assistant chief for Turingwi sub-location in Ngaremara ward. The assistant chief was found in possession of Sh16,000 of marked money when the officers searched him.”

“The suspect is being held at the Isiolo police station as investigations continue. He will be arraigned in court soon,” said the EACC boss.

Mr. Wekesa noted that cases of extortion by public office bearers were on the rise and asked members of the public to report such matters at the EACC offices for appropriate action to be taken.
