Ethics and Anti-graft commission has revealed that one of the major factors contributing to the increased cases of corruption in North Eastern counties are clan politics, personal greed, poor leadership skills and nepotism.
According to the EACC head of corporate communications Marimba Kairichi, many of graft cases in Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties have been attributed to nepotism and favoritism which unfortunately, pose challenges to devolution.
He stated that major county contracts are awarded to contractors basing on clan and political inclinations.
The commission further disclosed that many workers in the three counties were in the habit of absconding duties for up to three months, yet they still appear on the payroll.
The EACC official now wants county government to stop effecting salary payments to all workers who do not report to work, adding that they are a burden to the tax payers.
Marimba was speaking during the closing ceremony of a two-day workshop held in Mandera town for departmental directors and county executives that was organized by the EACC.
He also asked the county bosses to introduce a bio-metric system to curb staff absenteeism.
